#GivingTuesday. Get it!

We’ve had Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so now it’s time for Giving Tuesday.  This is actually a thing!  And it’s a thing I can support wholeheartedly.

What is #GivingTuesday?  From their website:

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. This year help us create #GivingTuesday. A new day for giving back.  On Tuesday December 3, 2013, global charities, families, businesses, community centers, students and more will come together to create #GivingTuesday.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Be a part of a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity.

You all know that I am donating all my royalties from December sales of TIARA TROUBLE to The Senior Source.  If you haven’t already picked up your copy, make it part of your Giving Tuesday.  You’ll spend $2.99 for the eBook, and The Senior Source will get $2.09 of that.  If you buy a print book, send me a picture of the receipt and I will match my eBook royalty to that sale.

In 2012, The Outside Lane donated 70 pairs of slipper socks to The Senior Source, hoping to help keep some older toes warm and toasty.  This year, I’d love to do even more by donating a nice lump sum.

Please share with you friends.  Even if you never read the book (which you should because you will learn great tips for keeping your butt from jiggling in a swimsuit) you will have helped a worthy cause.

Buy a Book, Boost a Senior Citizen!

Every year, I do a special holiday shopping guide of my favorite things.  This year, I’m doing it a little differently.  I am only hawking one item because ALL the proceeds from the sale will go DIRECTLY to helping Senior Citizens through The Senior Source.

For the month of December, I am donating all royalties from eBook sales of TIARA TROUBLE to The Senior Source.  That’s $2.09 going to help the elderly out of each sale of the $2.99 eBook.

My grandparents were all of significant importance to me, and my great-grandparents were for my mom and dad.  We were all fortunate to have had our people around for good lengths of time, and fortunate to have been able to keep them either with us until they passed away, or in very good elder care situations.  A lot of families, a lot of individuals aren’t as fortunate.  That’s why I love The Senior Source.

This is what they are about:

Who We Are

Since 1961, The Senior Source has served greater Dallas as the go-to nonprofit for aging services.  We assist older adults at all income levels from the most active to the very frail. People come to us for help with job searches, nursing home advocacy, money management, volunteer opportunities and counseling on any aging issue.

The Senior Source is a United Way service provider.

What We Do

  • Provide help to older adults and caregivers of aging loved ones
  • Offer money management services and consultations
  • Assist with job search and employment opportunities
  • Advocate for nursing home and assisted living residents
  • Educate the community on issues affecting older adults
  • Coordinate volunteer activities for older adults
  • Place older adults as elementary school tutors and mentors
  • Provide companions for low income, frail elderly

So, when you’re doing your holiday shopping, please consider buying a copy of TIARA TROUBLE as a gift.  For every eBook sold, my full royalty will go into helping the people who first helped us–our elderly.  If you buy a print copy, send me a picture of the receipt (lane@theoutsidelane.com), and I’ll match my eBook royalty for that sale.  $2.99 is less than the cost of activating a gift card!

Let’s go for it, and help make some money for Senior Citizens.

What is Sexy: Part Four

In just a couple of days, on May 22, you’ll see The Outside Lane featured on theNickelodeon Parents Connect Sexy Mama Boot Camp.  Leading up to that, I’d like to introduce you (and any new readers) to some things I think are sexy.

1.  Music is sexy

All the music you want to hear

My friend, Sunshine, is the host of the raddest retro radio station around: The Retro Red-Eye Express.  Retro Red-Eye Express, is on Saturday night, 11pm-2am CT on 90.1 FM KKFI (in Kansas City area), and streams live on http://kkfi.org.  The show features music which mostly tends toward New Wave, 80s Alternative, Post-Punk, Gothic/Industrial, 90s Electronica, Punk, some 70s Glam Rock, and many current artists whose music is influenced by those genres.

Saturday nights 11pm – 2am (CT) on 90.1 FM KKFI, Kansas City Community Radio

2.  Helping Senior Citizens is sexy
One of my personal favorite community outreaches is the Dallas based Senior Source.  Seniors are a forgotten population, hidden away in nursing homes, or invisible because they are homebound and helpless.  The mission of The Senior Source is to improve the quality of life of older adults in the greater Dallas area through protection, eldercare, advocacy, volunteerism, and employment services.  Since 1961, The Senior Source has served greater Dallas as the go-to nonprofit for aging services.  We assist older adults at all income levels from the most active to the very frail. People come to us for help with job searches, nursing home advocacy, money management, volunteer opportunities and counseling on any aging issue.
If you’re in DFW, look them up and see how you can help.  Otherwise, look for your local senior resources and get involved!  We’ll all be old one day.  Let’s make sure our elders have the care we’re going to want to have.
