Taking Away the Keys

When you’re no longer just a daughter — you’re a caregiver.

Taking Away the Keys: A Momoir began as a moment so many families face: realizing that the person who raised you can no longer safely drive, live independently, or make decisions the way they once did.

From that moment grew a body of work about dementia, caregiving, grief, role reversal, and the quiet, daily reckonings that come with loving someone whose mind is changing.

This is not advice from a distance.
This is lived experience.

Taking Away the Keys: A Substack

Taking Away the Keys: A Momoir explores what happens when memory fades but love doesn’t, and the conversation continues on the Taking Away the Keys Substack. You’ll find printable checklists, guides, and helpful tools, along with my thoughts as I continue on my journey.

Through writing, audio, and conversation, I focus on:

  • Dementia and cognitive decline (Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, mixed diagnoses)
  • The emotional whiplash of caregiving
  • Grief that starts before death
  • Family dynamics, guilt, anger, tenderness, and exhaustion
  • The moment you realize you are now the parent

This work is honest, sometimes darkly funny, often painful, and always rooted in empathy.

Taking Away the Keys: Out Loud (Podcast)

Some stories need a voice.

🎙️ Taking Away the Keys: Out Loud is the audio companion to my caregiving work. Weekly, in a 15 minute episode, I answer questions I’m regularly asked, reflect in real time, and speak directly to the moments caregivers recognize but rarely say out loud.

This is not a polished “how-to” podcast.
It’s a place to feel seen.

You’ll hear:

  • Personal stories of how I have navigated three different caregiving journeys
  • Reflections on caregiving moments as they happen
  • Grief, humor, anger, relief, and truth—without platitudes
